Care and services for seniors aging in place

senior assist

Aging in place is the abiity to live in your own home as you age. Rather than choosing an assisted-living facility or nursing home, this allows you to maintain your routines and independence.

Over 90% of adults over the age of 65 are living in their own homes although only 46% prepare to do so.  As we get older, physical limitations, chronic health conditions, and mental declines may necessitate asking for assistance from others with tasks like cleaning, lawncare, transportation, medication, and mobility.

Options for care and support services

If you are in this position or planning for future needs, you can consider these options for care and support services.

1.       Informal care.  Friends, neighbors, and family members provide assistance to complete daily tasks and home maintenance.  This is easier if friends and family live in close proximity.  A well-developed network means that the responsibility for this care can be shared.  Many hands make light work.

This does require acknowledging that there are some tasks that you cannot or should not be doing yourself any longer.  And you must overcome any reluctance to ask for help.  I think you’ll be surprised at how willing others will be to help you.

2.      In-home care.  In-home care is the assistance of professionals.  Medical professionals like visiting nurses and certified home health aids can provide more extensive health care assistance than your friends and family.  In some cases, insurance may cover the cost of these services.

But many other types of professional services can be contracted (lawncare, cleaning, tax preparation).  Be sure to investigate these vendors by checking their Better Business Bureau ratings, reviews on the internet, and recommendations from trusted family and friends.

3.      Community services.  Local communities frequently offer services designed for seniors.   Meal delivery services like Meals on Wheels and senior transportation services may be available in your location.  To find out more, contact your local and regional agencies on aging.

Seniors can take advantage of these care and services that allow them to successfully age in place.
